Overview : A stylish 2-door roadster

The 2007 Porsche Boxster is a 2-door roadster manufactured by Porsche. The first-generation Boxster, the 986, was launched in late 1996 as a 1997 model. Porsche's smallest and cheapest vehicle, the 986 took over from the Porsche 968, which was discontinued in 1995. The Boxster's title is a combination of the word "boxer", referring to its horizontally-opposed or "boxer" engine that lies in the middle, and the word "roadster", referring to its convertible top.

The 2007 Boxster is available in two models: the Boxster, which is the base model, and the Boxster S. Both are offered in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) and two-seater layout.

The Boxster is covered by a basic and drivetrain warranty of four years or 50,000 miles. It competes with the likes of BMW Z4, Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar XK Series, and Porsche Cayman.

Engine and Performance - Choice of two competent engines

The Boxster offers a choice of two competent engines. The base Boxster derives power from a 2.7-liter flat 6-cylinder engine with VarioCam Plus, which gives out 245 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 201 lb-ft. of torque @ 4,600 - 6,000 rpm. This engine is linked to a standard 5-speed manual transmission with double inertia flywheel and hydraulic clutch.

The Boxster S is powered by a 3.4-liter flat 6-cylinder engine with VarioCam Plus, which issues 295 hp @ 6,250 rpm and 251 lb-ft. @ 4,400 - 6,000 rpm. This engine teams up with a standard 6-speed manual transmission with double inertia flywheel and hydraulic clutch.

The option of a 5-speed Tiptronic S transmission is offered as an option for both these trims.

Walk-around - Alluring, sporty, and sexy

With an aerodynamically chiseled exterior and a sports car design, the Boxster looks very enticing and classy. It measures 171.6 inches in length and rides on a wheelbase of 95.1 inches.

The headlights of the Boxster are positioned separately from the fog lamp and turn signal cluster, which gives its front fascia a distinct look. The fog lamps, positioned at the car’s corner, illuminate the road well in foggy weather. The Boxster features a large frontal area and grille openings, and wide wheel arches, which further accentuate its sporty looks. Heated and electrically adjustable outside mirrors are also standard on both the models.

However, the first thing that you notice about the Boxster is its convertible top, which is made from a tough, color-fast fabric, specially protected against ultraviolet light. This convertible top perfectly matches the Boxster’s exterior design. It also features a heated glass window, which is extremely wear-resistant and offers consistent visibility in all weather conditions. Both the Boxsters are also available with the option of an aluminum hardtop, which is styled to match the Boxster’s elegant lines. An automatic extending rear spoiler is standard on both the Boxster models.

The Boxster base and Boxster S are also available with the option of a Windstop, a three-part wind deflector that reduces turbulence in the head and shoulder area of the cockpit. The Windstop can be installed on the rear supplemental safety bars and comes with a storage compartment on the rear bulkhead pan.

The base Boxster wears 17-inch wheels, which feature a distinctive and aerodynamically engineered five-spoke design and rolls on 205/55 ZR 17 front and 235/50 ZR 17 rear tires. The Boxster S comes with slightly larger 18-inch wheels and rides on 235/40 ZR 18 front and 265/40 ZR 18 rear tires. A further range of 18-inch and 19-inch wheels are available as optional equipment on both the trims. All wheels come with anti-theft protection.

Some exterior optional packages available on the Boxster include a Sport Package, a Sport Chrono Package, a Sport Chrono Package Plus, and a SportDesign Package.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience - Blends aesthetics and comfort

The Boxster comes with aesthetically intelligent interiors, which exude warmth and comfort. The standard seats in both Boxster models are upholstered in leather. An optional feature allows full electric adjustment of fore/aft position, height, backrest angle, and lumbar support. The seat and lumbar support settings, along with exterior mirror positions can be stored in a memory function with two sets of preferences, and can be selected using buttons on the door.

The Boxster is also offered with the option of leather sports seats, which are more firmly upholstered than the standard Boxster seats. These sports seats can be power adjusted for fore/aft position, height, backrest angle, seat angle, and lumbar support. Heated front seats are optional on both the models.

The Boxster features manually-adjustable climate control, which maintains a pleasant temperature inside the cabin. In addition to the standard climate control, both the Boxster and Boxster S trims offer an optional fully automatic climate control system. You can choose your ideal temperature and the system works to cool or heat the cabin as per your requirements. Both the models also come standard with power windows.

Boxster comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. A self-dimming rear-view mirror and driver-side mirrors with rain sensor are optional on the Boxster. The Boxster features a front and center console with storage, a lockage glove-box, and integrated dual cup-holders.

For entertainment, both the models come equipped with a digital radio with an in-dash CD player. Some other entertainment options available on both the models include a Bose surround sound system and a Sound Package Plus. The option of a CDC-4 six-disc CD-auto-changer is available on the Boxster base model, while the Boxster S is offered with an optional remote 6-disc CD-auto-changer. The Boxster models are also available with the option of Porsche communication management (PCM) with DVD navigation system and an extended navigation system, which includes route-recording and back-tracing.

Some optional packages available on the Boxster base include the Boxster Preferred Package and the Boxster Preferred Package Plus. The Boxster S is available with the option of a Boxster S Preferred Package and a Boxster S Preferred Package Plus. Power Seat Package and Leather Package are offered on both the models.

Driving Impressions - Highly responsive driving dynamics

For those who take driving as a passion, there is no substitute for the sheer inspiration of the Boxster. Both Boxster trims are powered by a water-cooled, six-cylinder “boxer” engine with four-valve cylinder heads. The 2.7L I-6 and 3.4L I-6 engines deliver 245 hp and 295 hp respectively. To hit a speed of 0 to 60 miles per hour, the 2.7L takes 5.8 seconds and 3.4L engine takes 5.1 seconds. Both the engines deliver an awesome performance and an impressive acceleration.

Both are maneuvered by a hi-tech hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion steering, which offers direct action and sensitive response. At low speeds, the steering requires only a light touch, while at higher speeds, where stability is more critical, steering input requires a heavier hand.

The Boxster rides on a front suspension that includes McPherson strut, transverse link, and coil spring, and the rear suspension comprises of a torsion beam and coil spring. This suspension system soaks up all kinds of bumps on roads and delivers a smooth, breezy ride.

Both Boxster models come equipped with an advanced braking system, which includes 4-piston monobloc fixed alloy calipers and ventilated disc brakes. These brakes, assisted by a vacuum brake booster, provide forceful stopping power to the Boxster’s wheels. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is also standard on both the models. It prevents locking up of wheels during sudden braking or emergency maneuvers.

Both Boxster models are equipped with Porsche stability management (PSM) as standard. The PSM provides additional control to the vehicle in difficult driving conditions by monitoring its direction, speed, yaw velocity, and lateral acceleration. With all these modern mechanical features, the Boxster offers a brisk and comforting driving experience.

Safety - Engineered to protect

The Boxster comes loaded with modern safety features, right from its structure to its interiors. Its structure is engineered to protect the passengers in the event of a collision. The Boxster’s front is bolstered by a number of transverse and longitudinal support beams and various deformation zones. Three separate load-bearing levels help direct impact forces around the passenger cell. The vehicle’s rigid shell structure is reinforced by stiff body panels forged from two-sided galvanized steel. The doors are reinforced with advanced alloys such as strong Boron steel.

Some  other safety features standard on the Boxster include dual front advanced airbags, head and thorax side airbags, seat-belt pre-tensioners and force limiters, exterior/interior alarm system, and central locking. Both the models also come with an anti-theft system with immobilizer, interior radar surveillance and remote control, a rear park assist system, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
